After a hectic day, you freshen up, all clean and moisturized, when a fragrance suddenly hits you hard, and you are transported back in time to your memories. Flashes appear in front of you, and you cherish those days. The smell makes you feel warm, proud and humbled at the same time. Why does the smell of a certain fragrance feel different than our other five senses?

Why Do Smells Trigger Memories More Than Other Senses?

Unlike our other five senses, smell has a shortcut to our brain. Let me explain.

When we inhale a fragrance, signals travel to the olfactory bulb, which then connects directly to areas responsible for memory and emotion, the hippocampus and amygdala. Because this pathway is shorter and less filtered, the smell of a fragrance often triggers feelings before we consciously understand them. Fragrance does not simply register as a smell, it becomes an emotional experience stored in the brain.

Why Certain Fragrances Stay With Us for Years?

Every fragrance has a story tied to it. When I first came to Canada with two suitcases full of dreams and ambition higher than the exosphere, I used a certain body lotion. Suddenly a few days earlier, after 2 years, I purchased the same lotion and used it again. Within a few seconds, I was transported back to 2024 when I was a newcomer in Canada, without a job, confused, struggling with academic pressure yet full of hope, I would use that lotion everyday.

That fragrance reminded me of uncertainty, struggle, and quiet determination. It brought back a version of me who was still figuring things out, but who dared to begin.

How a Fragrance Becomes a Part of Our Personality?

That particular fragrance of the lotion is a part of my identity now. Anytime I smell it, I relive  that old me who dreamt of such high things of herself, who dared to leave her home and family behind to start a new chapter of her life. It reminds me of courage. I wear it with confidence and a stronger ambition than before.

How Do We Choose to Attach a Memory to a Fragrance?

But, can we choose the memories we attach to a particular fragrance? To some extent, yes. We can intentionally associate certain fragrances with meaningful moments like new beginnings, achievements and healing. Over time, our brain links that fragrance to those emotional experiences. But, few aspects of our lives are in our hippocampus just to remind us of how far we have come in our life.

Why Do We Have Signature Fragrances?

Signature fragrances help us build our unique presence. Most of the famous brands have their own unique blend of fragrances that represent their brand image and make a mark on people’s preferences and selection. On a daily basis, we all have our own “signature perfumes” which we like to wear. It helps us create our presence amongst the crowd. When we pass someone, that person knows that it is us as it almost becomes a part of our identity.

Our loved ones have their own fragrances, and whenever we smell something similar to that or exactly that, we feel their presence, and it takes us back to look at some good and happy memories. It is always the memories that give a fragrance its value and make it close to our hearts. The memories and the stories attached to a fragrance help us feel the warmth, experience the journey, and laugh at those moments all in a spray.
